Saturday’s two-alarm blaze deemed accidental

Local fire officials say Saturday’s two-alarm fire in the 1400 block of Kentucky Street was accidental and that damages are estimated at $135,000.

Division Chief Eve Tolefree, a Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical spokeswoman, said Monday that the fire at 1421 Kentucky St. was caused by “misuse of an open-flame device.”

Local fire crews responded to the blaze after dispatchers received reports of a fire on the front porch of the house around 4:15 a.m. Flames were initially visible on the front of the three-story house and the fire spread into a third-floor wall and to the attic space. All three residents evacuated the home and were unharmed before emergency crews arrived.
