40 years ago: Landfill site still undecided

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 13, 1974:

Judging from citizen opposition at Douglas County Commission meetings this week, there was no good place to put a landfill. Residents at the meeting raised objections to all three landfill sites under consideration, and commissioners today took the controversial decision “under advisement.” Residents opposed to a site southeast of Lawrence protested this morning, while others opposed to two sites southwest of the city had appeared before the commission earlier in the week. Richard McClanathan, city-county planning director, today presented the recommendation of the Douglas County Solid Waste Advisory Board in favor of the southeast location, but previously, county public works director Dean Sanderson had recommended one of the southwest locations. One southwest possibility was located south of County Road 458 and half a mile west of U.S. 59; the other was north of the first tract, between the Yankee Tank Creek and the Wakarusa River.
