25 years ago: In spite of obstacles, parking garage construction on schedule

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 13, 1989:

Work on the city-owned parking garage at the Lawrence Riverfront Plaza was proceeding on schedule, said Assistant City Manager Mike Wildgen today. In spite of recent rains and other obstacles, construction was within schedule and the 511-space parking garage was expected to be finished in time for the opening of the plaza later this year. A week earlier, the Lawrence City Commission had approved using $40,000 in contingency funds to excavate debris under the construction site left from demolition of the old paper mill building, but work had been continuing as planned since then, Wildgen said. The two-tier, $2.3 million parking garage was to serve both the Riverfront Plaza and city hall.
