Flash flood warning for Douglas County, surrounding area until 4:15 a.m.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a flash flood warning for Douglas County and surrounding areas until 4:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Other areas covered by the advisory are northern Franklin County, northern Osage County, Shawnee County and southern Jefferson County.

Weather service radar and spotters indicated heavy rain of two to four inches over the warned area. An additional rainfall of one to two inches in expected and will cause flash flooding.

Do not attempt to travel across flooded roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, the Lawrence area, on average, receives 1.88 inches rain from June 1 through 9. The area matched that number on Monday alone, receiving 1.87 inches as of 11 p.m.

For the month so far, Lawrence has received 5.14 inches. Flash flood warnings were issued prior to midnight Monday, with the NWS predicting another two to four inches to come down overnight.

On the year, as of 11 p.m. Monday, Lawrence has received 12.8 inches. Lawrence typically receives 15.77 by this point in the year.

The latest U.S. drought report, issued on June 5, had all of Douglas County listed in a “moderate drought.”
