Name: Jordan Ashley Hocker

Age: 25

Hometown: Topeka

Relationship status: I am involved with a human being that I love spending time with.

Time in Lawrence: Just visiting

Occupation: Poet

Dream job: (I’d like to create a) supplementary education program that teaches children about art and coping skills.

What were you doing when scouted? I was street performing a piece called “The Typewriter Oracle” where I type poems for people about whatever they want.

Describe your style: My style is very eclectic; it’s a mix of old and new. I like to take long skirts, prairie styles, the high-wasted things from the ’70s and give it a polished look in the same way you would find it in the ’60s. But, obviously I have the side of my head shaved!

Fashion trends you love: I love (how styles from) the ’80s are coming back! I love the pants suits and asymmetrical haircuts along with brightly colored lipstick: orange, purples, and blues.

Fashion trends you hate: I don’t like any style that doesn’t look flattering on a woman who has curves. Like things that ride on the hips instead of the waist and things that are meant to hang off very skinny women that are sold as fashionable trends but that don’t apply to women with real bodies.

Fashion influences: It’s a little bit of ’50s housewife. More so, I see something that’s striking, that stands out and that I think I can pull off. When I’m buying a piece of clothing, it is (based on) “can I rock it”?

What would you like to see more of in Lawrence? I’d like to see more of Kansas here experiencing what Lawrence is all about. … I would like (too see) more involvement with artists and the rest of the state.

Less of? This is going to make me very unpopular but I can stand to see less KU stuff. I think you have two stores completely dedicated to KU sportswear. Like, come on: make it an Etsy and go home!

Tattoos or piercings: My favorite tattoo is one that is done in brown ink. It is an arrow that was designed by my dear sister and I with some Navajo symbolism as this kind of badge/totem to send ourselves forward into our lives with.

Tell us a secret: I only shave my legs once a year! And for the record, that’s on New Year’s Eve when I’m wearing a really nice fancy party dress!
