The Fashion Column Twins: Summer shorts

As we’re in the heart of summer and can’t seem to escape this heat wave lately, Elizabeth and I thought it would be fitting to show our favorite styles of shorts.

Some of you might already own some of these, but shorts are so versatile that we wanted to show you the different ways to style them. These styles have really come in handy this season, and may even become a staple at the beginning of fall.

Classic denim shorts from American Eagle

Boyfriend shorts from Gap

Crochet shorts from TJ Maxx

Classic Denim

Denim shorts can be found everywhere, so it’s pretty obvious that you should stock up on these.

The classic style of denim shorts have a bit of a worn-in feel with possibly some destroyed details throughout for a casual look. This is a great style to throw on for weekend errands or get-togethers. You don’t want something too short or too tight. Shorts in general should never be skin tight. Remember, this is laid-back and casual, so make sure they are a relaxed fit and you’re comfortable moving around in them.

Where to buy: Urban Outfitters, American Eagle, Express, J. Crew

How to style: Try styling this with a nice button-up blouse, sandals and a crossbody bag for a weekend look. Add a belt and tuck in the shirt for a put-together feel. You could also opt for a basic scoop neck, relaxed fit tee, and sandals or flats. When the temperatures cool down, throw on a lightweight sweater and ankle boots. You could also layer a tank top with a cardigan and wear with this style of shorts.

Boyfriend Shorts

The boyfriend short is a fairly new style that has also been popping up everywhere. It’s basically a slightly oversized version of the classic denim short. I like this style because it’s guaranteed to give you a relaxed and comfortable fit.

Where to buy: Gap, J. Crew, Old Navy

How to style: Like the denim short, the boyfriend short can be styled similarly. We like to wear them with tank tops, button-up shirts tucked in with a belt or casual cardigans for fall.

Crochet and Lace Shorts

Shorts with a crochet or lace construction tend to create a dressy look; however, they’re easy to dress down as well. You want to make sure these shorts are fully lined, especially if they are in a lighter color. Like any shorts, make sure to give your legs some wiggle room, so nothing too fitted.

Where to buy: Express, Loft, TJ Maxx

How to style: Try dressing these up this summer with a silky cami tucked in, and some strappy heeled sandals. Dress them down with an untucked chambray shirt, and sandals or slip-ons.
