25 years ago: KUMC nurses interested in forming bargaining unit

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 28, 1989:

Citing low morale, more than 280 Kansas University Medical Center nurses signed a petition this week indicating their interest in creating a formal bargaining unit. About a month previously, the nurses, known as the Kansas University Nurses Assn., had filed a request with the Kansas Public Employees Relations Board to formally represent about 600 medical center nurses. Among their reasons for organizing, the group mentioned poor communication with hospital administrators as well as low morale caused by inadequate pay and benefits and high turnover. A KUNA officer said the movement had grown out of frustration of not being taken seriously when voicing concerns.
