25 years ago: ABC issues warning to clubs hosting benefits

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 26, 1989:

Many causes, both national and local, had benefited by fundraising efforts in Lawrence which included concerts in local private clubs. However, a recent warning by Alcoholic Beverages Control called attention to the fact that such benefits were illegal if the private clubs were serving alcohol to anyone other than their members and their members’ guests. Recently an ABC officer had cited a portion of the liquor code that apparently had not been observed or enforced in Lawrence. The officer had warned the owners of The Bottleneck, 737 New Hampshire, not to hold a benefit concert for the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, which had its international headquarters in Lawrence. People who worked closely with the committee said they believed the action to stop the benefit was arbitrary, because ABC officers didn’t seem to be concerned about other benefit concerts. However, ABC director Tom Hanna said the action to warn The Bottleneck didn’t have anything to do with the nature of the benefit and that the ABC would continue to warn clubs and take action if they were holding benefits without permission.
