People browse through the Percolator following a live music concert at a Final Friday event. The citywide arts event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. and gives visitors a chance to meet with artists and enjoy Lawrence.

While this summer has been unseasonably mild, we still have our days. And today will be one of them. With a high of 99 and a blast-furnace wind of about 20 mph, you may feel like you’re baking when you’re outdoors. The partly cloudy skies may give us a little reprieve from the sun’s heat. Look for more of the same on Saturday, with a little bit cooler temps on Sunday, with a high forecast of 91.

Finally, Friday!

It’s Final Friday, and it comes the monthly art extravaganza in Lawrence. There will be exhibits all over downtown, in the Warehouse Arts District and in North Lawrence. Events include exhibits at the Lawrence Arts Center and fine art, street art, sculptures and from local artists at Art Emergency in the Warehouse Arts District. Get a full schedule below.

Fair play

The Douglas County Fair has no shortage of things for everyone to do. Tonight’s activities include Jackpot barrel racing at 7 p.m. in the Community Building. Saturday has more in store, with horse shows throughout the day in the Community Building. Mowbashers mower derby will take to the ring in the arena at 7:30 p.m. The fairgrounds are at 2110 Harper St.

Library OPENS!

The much anticipated opening of the new Lawrence Public Library is Saturday. Events are planned all day, including a movie on the lawn — “Ghostbusters” — that night. Lawrence Public Library Grand Opening, 10 a.m., Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St., and then Dinner and a Movie, with food vendors at 7 p.m., live entertainment at 7:30 p.m. and the main attraction, “Ghostbusters,” at 9 p.m. on the new Library lawn, Seventh and Vermont streets.

Stage wizardry

Students 13 to 18 years old gain stage skills during a week of intensive preparation, which culminates in a full-scale performance on Sunday. “The Wiz” is a musical based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum but with a more fun, funky modern version of the story. See the Baldwin take on this favorite book at Broadway at Baker and Music Theatre for Young People’s performance of “The Wiz,” 2:30 p.m. at Rice Auditorium, 404 Eighth St., Baldwin City. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and children under 12.
