Today in Lawrence: A break in the heat; arts candidates meet and greet; piano recital

Even though today brings a break in the heat, it's always a good summer day when you can take a run through the fountain.

Break in the heat

Today brings a little cooler temps, but that’s not saying much. The high today is expected to be 89 degrees with sunny skies, humidity about 63 percent. Compared to 101, that sounds practically fall-like! It’s still a good day for a run through the fountain.

Arts candidates

The city of Lawrence invites the public to attend a reception to meet and greet the finalist candidates for the city’s new Director of Arts and Culture position. The candidates will have a brief introduction and then mingle with attendees. The reception is at 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.

Piano pros

Don’t pass these notes: The International Institute for Young Musicians (IIYM) Gala Honors Recital brings talented pianists to its academy, and the performance is free. The free show is at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center Pavilion, 1600 Stewart Drive.

Monty redux

Did you miss the big-screen broadcast of “Monty Python Live (mostly)” from London’s O2 Arena? You have another chance! Catch the rebroadcast of the show, featuring comedy legends John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, at the Regal Southwind Stadium 12, 3433 S. Iowa St. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. See www.FathomEvents.com for tickets.
