KU basketball notebook: Coach K says Cavs should trade Wiggins

If Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski were running the Cleveland Cavaliers, Andrew Wiggins would already be wearing Timberwolves gear.

Appearing on CBS Sports radio with John Feinstein, Krzyzewski was asked whether Cleveland should pull the trigger and trade its 2014 No. 1 overall draft pick, Andrew Wiggins, to land All-Star power forward Kevin Love from Minnesota.

“There’s absolutely not one second of hesitancy. I’d trade for Kevin Love,” Krzyzewski, the Duke and Team USA coach, said. “That’s not saying anything bad about any of the other youngsters. Love’s an All-Star, and he’s a double-double guy. But he’s a double-double guy who can spread the court. There aren’t many double-double guys who can spread the floor — he can go inside and outside. There may be a low-post player that gets you a double-double, but Love … you can do a lot of different things with him.”

Wiggins, after spending one season at Kansas University, soon could sign with Cleveland, according to a report by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. The Cavs haven’t signed him yet as a measure to maximize cap space.

Cleveland still could ship Wiggins to Minnesota after signing him, but Windhorst reported NBA rules would put such a move on hold for 30 days.

Late Night visitor

Stephen Zimmerman, a 7-foot senior basketball center from Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas, will make an official recruiting visit to Kansas University for the Oct. 10 Late Night in the Phog, Zimmerman told Rivals.com on Monday.

Zimmerman, the No. 7-rated prospect in the Class of 2015 according to Rivals, has cut Louisville and now has a list of KU, Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina, UNLV, Arizona and UCLA.

He will visit North Carolina on Oct. 3 and Kentucky Oct. 17.

Frankamp soph to watch

ESPN.com’s C.L. Brown identified Kansas guard Conner Frankamp as one of 12 “under-the-radar sophomores to watch” in the 2014-15 season.

To qualify for the list, a player had to be ranked in the top 100 of the Class of 2013, average around 10 minutes a game or less as a freshman and likely return for his junior season.

Of Frankamp, a 6-foot, 165-pound sophomore from Wichita, Brown wrote: “The Jayhawks are looking for the stability at point guard they never seemed to get last season. Frankamp could provide it, not to mention add another shooter to the lineup.”

Other players to make the list were: Marquette post Luke Fischer, Colorado guard Tre’Shaun Fletcher, Louisville guard Anton Gill, North Carolina forward Isaiah Hicks, Memphis forward Kuran Iverson, Duke guard Matt Jones, Kentucky forward Marcus Lee, Ohio State forward Marc Loving, Arizona guard Elliott Pitts, Syracuse forward Tyler Roberson and Baylor wing Ish Wainright.

Peach buzz

KU basketball recruiting target Allonzo Trier’s scoring outbursts at a showcase in North Augusta, South Carolina, landed the 6-foot-4 guard on Zagsblog.com’s All-Peach Jam team.

Also being recruited by Arizona, Louisville, UCLA, North Carolina, Kentucky, Georgetown and others, Trier scored a Peach Jam-high 30.8 points per game, including a 42-point outing.

Kansas targets Antonio Blakeney (6-3 shooting guard), Caleb Swanigan (6-8 center) and Isaiah Briscoe (6-3 point guard) also made the Zagsblog All-Peach Jam first team.

Garrett honored

The National Association of Basketball Coaches on Monday named KU senior walk-on Christian Garrett to its Honors Court, for top student-athletes of the 2013-14 season.

To qualify for the Honors Court, players must be upperclassmen with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the season.
