Talented golfers from 30 states played 18 holes Monday at either Alvamar public or Alvamar Country Club. A dozen of them qualified for the Midwest Classic, a Web.com Tour event scheduled for Thursday through Sunday at Lionsgate in Overland Park.

Chris Thompson, whose summer has included making the cut at the Byron Nelson Championship and competing in the U.S. Open, was not among the qualifiers.

Thompson, 37, has played in enough qualifiers through the years to have a good feel for what’s good enough. As he wiped the sweat from his forehead after carding a 1-under-par 71 on the public course, he accurately assessed his chances at 1 p.m.

“No shot,” he said. “It’ll take 4-under.”

As it turned out, that was the magic number for qualifying on the public course, and 3-under got the job done on the private course.

Ryan Baca, of Sugar Land, Texas, was low medalist on the private course with a 67. Drew Perry of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Jeremy Wells of Fort Myers, Florida, each shot 67 to share medalist honors on the public course.

Thompson’s morning got off to a terrific start when he made birdie on each of the first three holes. His day took a turn for the worse with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 9 and 10.

His round came one day after he finished in a four-way tie for third at the Waterloo Open in Iowa, one stroke off the pace in a tournament that paid the winner $55,000. (Former KU golfer Nate Barbee was among those tied with Thompson). A week earlier, Thompson finished second in the Metropolitan Open at the Country Club of St. Albans in St. Louis, losing to Chris Brant with a bogey on the sixth playoff hole.

Thompson next plans to compete in an Adams.com tour event at Colbert Hills in Manhattan this week.
