31-year-old Lawrence man charged with two counts of raping child under age of 14

A 31-year-old Lawrence man made his first appearance in court Tuesday after being booked into the Douglas County Jail on Monday on suspicion of having sex with a 13-year-old girl in May.

Assistant Douglas County District Attorney Deborah Moody formally charged the man with two counts of raping a child under the age of 14 at the man’s appearance Tuesday. Douglas County District Court Judge James George said if convicted, each charge carries a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

Lawrence Police Department spokeswoman Kim Murphree said officers began investigating this case about June 6 when a mother expressed concern about her daughter.

At the prosecution’s request, George set the man’s bond at $200,000. His next court proceeding will be July 29.
