25 years ago: Clinton Lake eaglets practicing soaring, diving

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 21, 1989:

Officials at Clinton Lake weighed in today with another bald eagle report. The eaglets, the first two known to have been born in Kansas, were getting stronger and venturing farther from their nest, according to Dave Rhoades, park manager for the U.S. army Corps of Engineers at the lake. Rhoades said the birds, which had first left their nesting tree the previous Sunday, were now flying up to two miles from home and were getting noticeably stronger and more confident of their flying abilities. The one adult eagle in the nest was still feeding the eaglets, but Rhoades said he and other rangers expected that to change soon. “We haven’t seen them feeding themselves yet, but I’m sure that’s next,” he said. The young eagles had begun soaring and one had been seen diving, as if testing its ability to catch food from the water, Rhoades said. It was not known how long the birds would stay in the area.
