25 years ago: Lecompton family has wildlife visitor

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 16, 1989:

A red-tail hawk was enjoying the hospitality of a local family this week. Burch Higgins said the hawk had shown up in her backyard two miles south of Lecompton a few days earlier, perching on the deck behind the house. “I looked out the window and he came swooping by…. He sat on the deck screaming until I got enough smarts to feed him.” After refusing corn, bread, and a cooked hamburger, the hawk accepted raw hamburger. The bird was also showing a culinary interest in Higgins’ cat, who was now spending all her days and nights indoors. “She’s always been a house cat and that’s probably the first time in her life she’s been scared,” Higgins said. Higgins’ neighbor John Solbach thought the bird might have been the same one that had appeared at his house in April.
