Lawrence:

• Because of a sanitary sewer extension, the 800 block of Oak Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The closure is expected to end July 31.

• Because of a water-line rupture, the city is performing emergency repair on 12th Street, from Ohio to Louisiana streets. The project is expected to be completed in mid-to-late August. Ohio Street to remain open while repair work is done at 12th and Louisiana streets. Road closure signs are posted at 13th and Louisiana streets for northbound traffic.

• A project to improve Ninth Street will begin July 14. Phase one includes sidewalk improvements on the south side of Ninth Street between Emery Road and Arkansas Street. One lane of eastbound traffic will be closed during this sidewalk construction. Phase two of construction will be the installation of signal pole bases on all corners of the Ninth Street ramp; Emery Road intersection. Temporary single-lane closures will be needed for this construction. At least one lane will be open at all times for east and westbound traffic. Phase three includes the mill and overlay of Ninth Street between Avalon Road and Arkansas Street. Once new pavement has been placed, new pavement markings and signal poles will be installed. Various lane closures will be required for this construction. At least one lane will be open at all times for east and westbound traffic.

• Starting July 7, Wakarusa Drive will be down to two lanes from Oread West Drive to north of Legends/Inverness Drive. Inverness Drive at Wakarusa Drive will be closed for the first phase from July 7 to September. Legends Drive at Wakarusa Drive will be closed for the second phase from September to November. The rehabilitation project is expected to be finished Nov. 24.

• Construction continues on intersection improvements at 23rd and Iowa streets. Traffic will be shifted to the south side of the intersection to construct the next phase of the intersection. Each approach to the intersection will have a dedicated left turn lane and one through lane. There will not be two lanes for westbound traffic. No large structures or superloads will be allowed through the project work zone. The entire 23rd and Iowa project is due for completion in November.

• The Kansas Department of Transportation has finished the maintenance work on the box tunnels on McDonald Drive. The project has moved to the next phase which includes the addition of a dedicated southbound turn lane to Iowa Street. There are two lanes available for east-and-westbound traffic and traffic speeds are reduced at this time.

• Eastbound and westbound 31st Street from Louisiana Street to Ousdahl Road and Louisiana Street, just south of 31st Street, will be closed to all traffic. Motorists will be able to turn north on Louisiana from 31st Street or east on 31st Street from Louisiana. This closure will remain in effect through summer 2015, weather permitting. The 31st Street closure is needed for the construction of a bridge-size box culvert and the reconstruction/realignment of 31st Street. The Louisiana Street closure is needed for the construction of the relocated 31st Street slab bridge over Naismith Creek.

• Milling and patching is taking place on streets generally near Fifth and Sixth and Tennessee streets, working toward Indiana Street. The area generally east of Iowa Street and north of Sixth Street encompasses the entire work zone. There may be locations that will include partial or full street closures for periods while work is being performed, especially those days that surface treatment work (overlay or microsurfacing) is performed. Streets may be impacted on separate occasions. The work is anticipated to be completed in August.

• City stormwater crews have partially closed Mississippi Street and 10th to 11th streets. Mississippi Street is currently one-lane only with a flagger at each end allowing traffic through. The project is set to be complete by Aug. 1.

• The Vermont Brick Street reconstruction project started on June 10. The brick street will be reconstructed in the 2100 block of Vermont Street with new brick pavers. The project also includes a diverter on the north leg of the intersection of 23rd and Vermont streets. The completion date for the entire project is Aug. 8.

• An overlay paving project between the east Topeka and Lecompton/Lawrence exits on the Turnpike/Interstate 70 (mile markers 183 to 198) began in late April.

• The City of Lawrence will be installing a new water line on Mississippi Street, from Third to Ninth streets. Project timeline is until Feb. 1, 2015.

• Contractors are installing two new force mains, by horizontal directional drilling from the Kaw Wastewater Treatment Plant to Pump Station Four in North Lawrence. The intersection of Eighth and Walnut streets is expected to remain closed until the end of the project in July. Detour signs have been posted in the area of Eighth and Walnut streets to accommodate local traffic as well as park and boat ramp visitors. Barriers will be installed to detour traffic as necessary within the project schedule. Traffic will be rerouted to Elm, Oak or Ash streets.

• Because of construction on the Kaw Water Treatment Plant, Indiana Street is closed from Third Street to south of the Burcham Park entrance. The entrance to Burcham Park is open. The water crane located on Indiana Street is not accessible. This closure is expected to last until July 16. During construction, an area in Burcham Park is fenced off with no public access to the river bank parking and playground equipment areas. Temporary access to the Kansas University Boathouse and park shelter area have been constructed around the work area. The access restrictions are expected to remain in place until work is completed this month.

• The City of Lawrence Utility Department will begin a waterline replacement project on Forrest Avenue from Learnard Avenue to Maryland Street and Maryland Street from E. 15th Street to Forrest Avenue. There will be no parking and the road will be close to thru traffic, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The project is expected to last until Sept. 30.

• Northbound and southbound Haskell Avenue from 27th Street to 29th Street in Lawrence will be closed for utility work, box culvert installation and reconstruction work through mid-August, weather permitting.

When Haskell Avenue reopens, motorists will travel on the new (relocated) Haskell Avenue to 29th Street, then follow 29th Street to old Haskell Avenue, and then old Haskell Avenue to the south. Eastbound and westbound 27th Street and 29th Street traffic movements will remain open at Haskell Avenue. Traffic will not be able to access Haskell Avenue from south of 27th Street to just north of 29th Street. Also, there will be no access to Haskell Avenue from E. 28th Street.

• Westland Construction is replacing the existing waterline on the west side of N. Iowa Street from Riverridge to Lakeview roads. N. Iowa Street will remain open to two-way traffic throughout construction. The westernmost lane of southbound N. Iowa Street from Riverridge to Lakeview roads will be closed to allow for installation of the waterline. Access to southbound N. Iowa Street from eastbound Kresge Road will be temporarily restricted to complete connections to the existing waterlines at this intersection. The project is being completed as part of the Department of Utilities yearly waterline replacement program. The project is expected to be completed by July 23.

• Beginning Monday, July 14, Route 458 (North 1200 Road) will be closed from East 902 Road. (the lower Clinton Dam road) to US-59 highway for improvement projects. The roadway is expect to reopen by Oct. 31, weather permitting. A signed detour will be established. The detour follows US-59 highway to K-10 highway (SLT) to East 900/North 1150 Road. (the upper road on Clinton Lake dam). Local access to properties within the road closure will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. While Route 458 is closed for construction, people traveling to the west and south sides of Clinton Lake from Lawrence should use Route 442 (Stull Road) and Route 1023/458 south from Stull. People traveling to the same area from the south should use US-56 highway (North 300 Road) to Route 1029 (East 550 Road). People wishing to access the Clinton Lake marina area and northeast portion of Clinton Lake should use Clinton Parkway or K-10 highway (SLT) to E 900 Road (the upper Clinton Lake dam road).

South Lawrence Trafficway:

• In December, a three-year construction project began to complete the 6-mile, four-lane Kansas Highway 10/South Lawrence Trafficway freeway. The project will move existing K-10 onto a new alignment that will begin at the south junction of the U.S. 59 and K-10 interchange and reconnect with existing K-10 in East Lawrence. Construction work on the project will be completed in phases. Each phase includes specific work and advance notification will be sent under separate cover for each phase of construction, including planned traffic impacts. The overall scheduled completion date for the project is fall 2016.

• The Kansas Department of Transportation weekday lane closures on westbound K-10; left lanes on either side of the Noria Road intersection in east Lawrence will be closed for the moving of rock material to be used for bridge embankment construction work beginning July 11. Lane closures will take place daily, Monday through Saturday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Project work is scheduled to be completed July 21, weather permitting. Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage and cones. There will be a 55-mph posted speed limit through the project work zone during working hours only throughout this project phase.
