Today in Lawrence: Events on stage, on screen and on foot

Bob Wandel, dressed in historical clothing, speaks about the gravestone of a Lawrence soldier during a walking tour of Oak Hill Cemetery on July 4. Wandel will be giving another tour at 10 a.m. Saturday.

On stage

Rodgers & Hart’s “The Boys From Syracuse” is a story of twins! More twins! Women chased and chaste! The first musical ever adapted from Shakespeare remains the most madcap musical farce ever to animate the stage. “The Boys from Syracuse” tells the story of two sets of identical twin brothers who are separated from each other in a shipwreck as young children. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Crafton-Preyer Theater, Murphy Hall, 1530 Naismith Drive. Tickets start at $10.

Veterans cemetery tour

Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Park pays tribute to the veteran soldiers who battled during all wars and are buried in Lawrence cemeteries with a walking tour of Oak Hill Cemetery with Bob Wandel. The tour will stop at the graves of veterans and provide insight into who they were and what they might have seen. The walking tour will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery, 1605 Oak Hill Ave. This event is free and open to the public. Meet at the veteran’s plot in Oak Hill Cemetery. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Keys to success

The International Institute for Young Musicians (IIYM) Piano Competition Semifinals will be 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lied Center Pavilion, 1600 Stewart Drive. The event is free; come listen to some of the most talented young pianists in the world.

WWII films

Four World War II-based films will be shown at the Lawrence Arts Center on Saturday and Sunday. Shown in chronological order, from the rise of the Nazi party to veterans returning home from war, the films are Cabaret (3 p.m. Saturday), Casablanca (7 p.m. Saturday), Five Graves to Cairo (3 p.m. Sunday) and Best Years of Our Lives (7 p.m. Sunday). The Arts Center is at 940 New Hampshire St.; tickets are $6.

Singing and dancing

Broadway at Baker and Music Theatre for Young People will present “Crazy for You” at 2:30 p.m., Sunday at Rice Auditorium on the Baldwin City campus. Students 13 to 18 years of age gain stage skills during the weeklong intensive preparation, which culminates in a full-scale performance. If dance is your thing, George and Ira Gershwin’s “Crazy For You” is a musical comedy featuring a large tap and dance ensemble. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and children under 12. Tickets are available at the door or by calling 594-8478.
