Lawrence Community Bike Ride coming July 19

The upcoming Lawrence Community Bike Ride aims to get people rolling and to showcase a beautiful place to do so.

The free event is set for July 19 along the South Lawrence Trafficway bicycle path. There are three distances of rides to choose from, plus special activities for tykes on bikes.

“We hope more and more people discover cycling as a fun and healthy activity,” Central Rotary Club member Steve Lane said, in a news release. “This event is a great opportunity for families and individuals to enjoy cycling in a safe and scenic area of Lawrence.”

The Central Rotary Club, which organizes the event, had to cancel last year’s ride because of rain. In case of rain this year, the event will be rescheduled for the following day, July 20.

This year’s ride begins at 8 a.m. at the Lawrence Rotary Arboretum, 5100 W. 27th St. The 10-mile route begins at 8 a.m. and travels almost to the Kansas Turnpike Lecompton interchange and back. The 3-mile ride begins at 8:30 a.m. and travels to the Clinton Lake Overlook and back. The 1-mile ride loops around the arboretum pond and can be ridden anytime from 8 to 11 a.m.

The Training Wheel Takeoff, where experts will help children ready to take off their training wheels, and the Safety Zone, where Safe Kids Douglas County will outfit children with bike helmets and safety tips, run from 8 to 11 a.m., though helmets are limited to while supplies last.
