Today in Lawrence: Fizz, Boom, Read; battle lessons; and jazz concert
Reading is out of this world
Dino O’Dell takes kids on a music and storytelling science adventure about stars, meteors and planets. Join Dino at the Summer in the City program Fizz, Boom, Take Me to Your Library from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., or later in the day from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St. The event is geared to kids ages 5-12.
Battle lessons
The Fort Leavenworth Series continues with Decisive Battles: “Decision in Bohemia: The Battle of Koniggratz, 1866.” There are many famous battles in history that we label as decisive events. However, history is replete with lesser-known clashes that were arguably just as significant in their respective wars. Don’t miss the chance to learn about these critical clashes at 3 p.m. at the Dole Institute, 2350 Petefish Drive.
Free jazz concert
KU Jazz Ensemble I will perform a free concert with special guests Deborah Brown, vocals, and Steve Leisring, trumpet. The performance gives local audiences a chance to preview selections from the repertoire for the ensemble’s upcoming European dates. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive.
