71-year-old Lawrence man suspected of aggravated sexual battery

A 71-year-old Lawrence man was booked into Douglas County Jail on suspicion of aggravated sexual battery late Thursday after police investigated a complaint that afternoon in the 600 block of West 25th Street.

At around 1:40 p.m. on Thursday, a victim reported that the man attempted to have sexual contact against the victim’s will, causing minor injuries and also damaging some property during the incident, according to Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. McKinley said the victim fled and contacted a nearby resident before calling police.

Before officers arrived, McKinley said, the man and another person left the home. Police later contacted the man and a witness early Thursday evening and arrested the man after an interview.

The man appeared in Douglas County District Court Friday and was given a $25,000 bond. He is set to return to court on Feb. 4.
