From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 28, 1974:

• Work on an Allen Fieldhouse improvement project could begin as early as May 1974, according to Keith Nitcher, KU vice chancellor of business affairs. However, Nitcher said, plans for the work had not yet been drawn up, and after their preparation they still needed approval from the Kansas Board of Regents. Included in the project was resurfacing of the basketball court and track areas. Nitcher added that along with the other hurdles, athletic department officials would have to get permission from the chancellor’s office if the Fieldhouse were to be torn up during Commencement time, when the building was sometimes used in the event of bad weather.
• Officials at the Bert Nash Mental Health Center were planning to present a report to the center’s board of directors by Feb. 11 to answer charges that Bert Nash was a “conveyor belt” to state mental institutions. Sandra Shaw, acting director, said the center’s staff was collecting data from its own files and awaiting a complete county admissions report from the Topeka State Hospital. The mental health center and the Douglas County Probate Court had come under fire recently for being “too willing” to recommend voluntary commitment, committing patients involuntarily, and failing to follow up on the disposition of patients committed to the hospital. Eberhard G. Burdzik, hospital superintendent, provided the Journal-World with admission figures showing that there had been 65 admissions and readmissions from Douglas County during the period from July 1, 1972, to June 30, 1973.
