Enjoy today’s warm weather while you can, because it’s not going to last.

After a sunny Sunday in the 60s, the temperature in downtown Lawrence was already up to 40 degrees by 10 a.m. Monday morning, with more sunshine and a projected afternoon high of 56, according to the National Weather Service. But temperatures are expected to sour quickly overnight.

Monday night’s projected low is 11 degrees, with gusty winds expected to push the “feels-like” temperature below zero. NWS projects that trend will continue Tuesday, with a wind chill near 3-below, an actual low of 18 and a high of only 28.

Wednesday calls for a more than 30-degree swing in 24 hours, with a high of 43 but a low of 7. That will slide into a dismal Thursday with a high of 19, low of 8 and more blistering wind chills likely, NWS says.

One positive note: Temperatures should begin to reverse course by the end of the week, bringing a windy but warmer Friday and a sunny Saturday afternoon back in the 50s.
