Schools, churches and others plan events over the next few days to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.:

• AmeriCorps members from the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence and the United Way will hold a Day of Service event from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at 1430 Haskell Ave.

There will be several volunteer activities, including making scarves, bracelets and Valentine cards, as well packaging trail mix — all to be donated to area non-profits.

The Boys & Girls Club asks that anyone under 16 be accompanied by an adult.

• Kansas University will celebrate King’s life with a series of events beginning at Strong Hall, 1450 Jayhawk Blvd., at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The commemoration will include a reading by Kenton Rambsy, a doctoral candidate in literature and a coordinator for The Project on the History of Black Writing at KU. A cappella group Genuine Imitation will perform.

Participants in a candlelight vigil will walk from Strong Hall to the Kansas Union, where another program will begin at 5:15 p.m. in the ballroom. Music will be provided by the Blue Jazz Trio. Clarence Lang, a KU associate professor of African and African-American studies, will speak.

Three essays about King, written by Liberty Memorial Central Middle School students, will be read.

• The Lawrence school district will put on several King-related ceremonies, all of which the public is invited to attend.

South Middle School will hold its annual Day of Celebration at 2:25 p.m. Friday in the school’s main gymnasium. The event will feature music and performances from contest-winning student work. Retired teacher Betty Norwood will speak.

West Middle School will also host a ceremony at 2:20 p.m. on Monday.

New York Elementary’s annual MLK Chili Feed will run from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in the school’s gym. Students will perform and collect written and oral histories from those who lived in the surrounding neighborhood or attended the school as a child.

• A community gospel musical will be performed at Free Methodist Church, 3001 Lawrence Ave., at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

• A community breakfast sponsored by the Lawrence Jayhawk Rotary Club by be at 7:30 a.m. Monday. Food will be served at Maceli’s Banquet Hall, 1031 New Hampshire St. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 785-842-3832. Attorney Albert J. Lopes will speak.
