Kansas women look to build off Big 12 win

Kansas junior guard Natalie Knight tries to drive past Texas Tech center Kellyn Schneider (31) along the baseline during their game, Saturday evening at Allen Fieldhouse.

After snapping a three-game losing streak and earning its first Big 12 victory of the season on Saturday against Texas Tech, Kansas University’s women’s basketball team continues a run of five straight games against programs from the Lone Star state tonight at Texas.

When the Jayhawks (8-8 overall, 1-3 Big 12) play at 7 p.m. in the Erwin Center against the Longhorns (11-5, 2-2), junior point guard Natalie Knight figures they should be in better position to win now than they were a week ago.

“I think any win is a confidence-booster,” Knight said after Kansas ran past Texas Tech, 67-46. “We’re gonna carry over that energy into the next game and the game after that, but we’ve just got to continue to get better and work hard.”

Kansas coach Bonnie Henrickson saw some “pop” from KU in its latest victory, including some flashes of contribution from the bench, which she wants to continue to see going forward.

“We’re a team that needs everybody, but I think that’s fun.” Henrickson said, noting Kansas doesn’t have any 35-minutes-a-game types right now. “But you’ve gotta be ready when your number’s called.”

Texas, which has played two straight overtime games, winning at home against Oklahoma and losing at West Virginia, has one of the stingiest defenses around. The Longhorns’ 32 percent field-goal-percentage defense ranks second in the nation and their 55.4 points allowed per game is 13th in the country.

Kansas has won three of its last four games against Texas, and the Jayhawks are 4-7 at Frank Erwin Center. Henrickson holds a 5-7 record versus the Longhorns.
