40 years ago: USD 497 applies for ‘computer learning’ grant

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 13, 1974:

  • The Lawrence School District 497 Board of Education this week approved, 5-2, a grant application for a three-year federally funded program for computer-aided learning. If the application were approved, 120 Lawrence High School students were expected to participate next fall, followed in the spring of 1975 by one of the junior high schools and four of the elementary schools. St. John’s School was also scheduled to participate. In the program, computers were to be used to grade and monitor students’ daily work in several subject areas. The computer would compile daily reports for teachers on each student and grade all objective tests.
  • Kansas University’s observatory had scheduled an open house for this evening for public viewing of Comet Kohoutek, weather permitting. Kohoutek had net been visible at the first open house the previous week.
