25 years ago: City installs new meter mechanisms on Mass Street

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 13, 1989:

  • Lawrence city crews today completed the installation of new mechanisms in the parking meters on Massachusetts Street. With the installation, the cost of parking was raised from 10 cents to 20 cents per hour. However, while the old meter mechanisms allowed for only a one-hour period, the new meters were timed for 90 minutes — a period of time that would cost drivers 30 cents. The new mechanisms also had “time-check” meter displays that could not be read by passersby. Meters now had a needle that would point to the time remaining, but to see how much time was left, a person would have to turn the handle.
  • Today was a Friday in 1989, and that meant, among other things, a new crop of movies opening in local theaters. In addition to “The Naked Gun” and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” which had already been playing in Lawrence, today saw the opening of “The Accidental Tourist,” “Talk Radio,” “Deep Star Six,” “Gleaming the Cube,” and “Rain Man.”
