40 years ago: City using record amounts of de-icing materials during recent cold snap

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 12, 1974:

Lawrence entered its 14th day of below-freezing temperatures today, recording a low of 12 below zero this morning — the lowest so far in 1974, but not as bad as the lowest-ever recorded in Lawrence on Feb. 22, 1899, which had been a bone-chilling 25 below zero. A warming trend tonight was expected to raise temperatures to eight above, which was no threat to the 9 1/2 inches of accumulated snow on the ground. The city had already used about 80 tons of salt, 700-800 tons of sand, and about 45 tons of calcium chloride in their attempts to de-ice city roads — as much as was usually used in an entire winter, according to City Street Supt. Arnold Wiley.
