40 years ago: Wintry mix pelts Lawrence area; newspaper carriers unfazed

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 9, 1974:

  • About half an inch of sleet, freezing rain, and snow pelted northeast Kansas this week, and more snow and bitter cold were in the forecast. The icy mix had put the frosting on a previous 4 1/2-inch snowfall and had made local roads somewhat treacherous. Lows tonight were predicted to be between minus five and five above.
  • Several Journal-World subscribers had contacted the circulation office this week to remark favorably on the “outstanding job” newspaper carriers had been doing during the recent cold, wet, snowy weather. Subscribers were quick to compliment many of the 175 “Little Merchants,” with one caller saying, “I’ve been getting my Journal-World right on time, no matter what the weather, and I don’t know how our carrier boy does it. It’s quite a tribute to our young people the way the carriers have been doing their job.”
  • A defective furnace was suspected to be the cause of a fire today at Cedarwood Apartments, 2430 Ousdahl. The blaze, which had been reported at 5:23 a.m., had resulted in an estimated $20,000 damage to the building and $5,000 to its contents. The only reported injury was to firefighter Wayne Schmidtberger, who suffered a severely sprained wrist in a slip on the ice. The apartment’s resident, a Kansas University freshman, was still at home in Easton for the semester break and was therefore not in the apartment when the fire started. Residents of nearby units were able to take shelter from the six-degree temperature in an unrented apartment across the street from the the affected building.
