Topeka’s first flight to Chicago lifting off as planned despite winter storm

Despite the winter storm that blasted Chicago over the weekend and continuing subzero temperatures, Topeka Regional Airport’s inaugural flight to the Windy City will take off as planned Tuesday.

The first flight is scheduled to depart at 2:54 p.m. from the airport, located at Forbes Field in southeast Topeka.

Topeka’s flight was on a list of potential cancellations because of the large winter storm affecting the Chicago hub, according to an announcement from the airport. However, United confirmed Sunday that the flight will proceed as scheduled.

Topeka is kicking off twice-daily service to Chicago O’Hare on United Express 50-passenger regional jets, with departures at 6 a.m. and 2:54 p.m. The airport plans to celebrate Tuesday’s flight with a pizza party — Chicago style — at 1 p.m. The event is open to the public.
