Gardner ? Lawrence High sophomore Alan Clothier won his second regional championship as eight of the Lions’ 10 wrestlers qualified Saturday for the Class 6A state meet.

Clothier defeated Gardner-Edgerton’s Emilio Fowler by a 7-5 decision to win the 182-pound weight class at the Gardner regional. Clothier was a regional champ at 170 last season and placed third at state.

The Lions placed fourth out of eight teams with 114 points. Olathe North emerged as the regional team champion with 174 points, followed by Gardner-Edgerton (157.5) and Olathe Northwest (134).

The 6A state meet will be held next weekend at Hartman Arena in Park City. The Lions joining Clothier at state will be: Alex Jones (second place, 285 pounds); Xavier Kenney (third, 106); Garrett Girard (third, 132); Tucker Wilson (third, 145); Ryan Bellinger (third, 170); Cy Burghart (fourth, 152); and Isaias Rojo (fourth, 160).

Firebirds qualify five

Topeka — Free State sophomore Quailan Fowler and senior Colton Steele both lost in their first-place matches on Saturday at the Washburn Rural wrestling regional.

Fowler lost by fall in 2:12 to Derby’s Braden Dipman to place second in the 113-pound weight class. Steele lost a major decision, 9-0, to Manhattan’s Austin Chauncey in the 160 class.

The Firebirds were fifth in the team standings with 71 points. Derby (195), Manhattan (194) and Junction City (184.5) dominated the top of the standings.

Five of Free State’s eight wrestlers will compete next week at state in Park City: Fowler, Steele, Sam Skwarlo (third place, 170 pounds), Sid Miller (fourth, 120) and Tyler Sampson (fourth, 285).
