40 years ago: Fuel shortages, wet weather slowing local construction projects

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 22. 1974:

The completion date for the Clinton Dam project had been moved from February to August of 1976, according to a front-page article in the Journal-World today. Fuel shortages and unusually wet weather were primarily to blame for the delay, according to John Judson, project engineer for List and Clark Construction Co. Weather, material, and design problems had also been plaguing the U.S. Hwy. 59 project south of Lawrence, which was now more than eight months behind schedule, according to Jim Bernard of N. R. Hamm Construction Co. Also suffering from delays were two buildings planned for Haskell Indian Junior College and Douglas County’s county-city judicial law enforcement building. However, several other local construction projects which had been held up over the winter were expected to be completed next month, including the Dillon Family Center, 27th and Iowa; Capitol Federal Savings and Loan Association, Iowa and Harvard Road; and the Lawrence Racquet Club on West 23rd Street. Expansion at Packer Plastics Inc., 2330 Packer Road, was also expected to be finished by that time.
