Just when it appeared host Free State High was on the brink of delivering a haymaker, tying the score at the end of regulation, Class 6A No. 7-ranked Shawnee Mission South turned it up a notch in overtime Tuesday night.

Keyed by a three-point play by South’s DeAngelo Bruster at the start of overtime, the Raiders unleashed a 19-7 run in the extra four-minute period to post a 73-61 victory in Sunflower League boys basketball action. Dainan Swope and Devin Newsome led the Raiders with 22 points apiece, with Newsome making all 16 of his free throws, including 12-for-12 in the fourth quarter and overtime.

“They’re a great team, period,” Free State head coach Chuck Law said of South, 14-3 overall, which went undefeated in becoming Class 5A state champion last season. “I’m real proud of our kids. We had a gut-check in the fourth quarter after playing a miserable third quarter, scoring only five points.

“To come back on a team of that caliber, from eight down in the fourth quarter and to put it into overtime, that says a lot about our kids.”

Free State (10-7) was led by Khadre Lane with 16 points. Cole Moreano and Blake Winslow added 15 apiece for the Firebirds, who came roaring back after trailing 49-41 with two minutes, 31 seconds remaining in regulation.

Winslow hit a driving layup for Free State, and after a South turnover, Cole Moreano drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key to slash the margin to 49-46 at the 2:42 mark.

Free State post player Lane then caught an outlet pass after another Raiders turnover and threw down a dunk to pull the Firebirds within 49-48.
