Woman injured in Monday collision treated, released from K.C.-area hospital

The 19-year-old Lawrence woman taken to a Kansas City-area hospital after a three-vehicle collision at 19th Street and Haskell Avenue on Monday has been treated and released, according to Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman.

Yvonne Ortiz was released from an Overland Park hospital after being treated for a concussion and was the only person injured and treated after the collision. The crash occurred about 12:20 p.m. Monday when a Buick traveling east on 19th Street collided with a Saturn that was southbound on Haskell Avenue. According to McKinley, a Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical vehicle also involved in the collision reported seeing the Saturn, in which Ortiz was a passenger, run a red light and collide with the Buick.

Neither Ortiz nor the Saturn’s driver, Heimey Chavez, 22 of Lawrence, was wearing a seat belt, and neither was ejected, McKinley said. Police issued Chavez a citation for allegedly ignoring the red light.
