40 years ago: Credit card use increasing on Kansas Turnpike

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 18. 1974:

  • Use of Kansas Turnpike credit cards to pay tolls was up 8.59 percent compared to the previous year, according to Keith Russell, comptroller. Russell said this week that about 10,700 companies and individuals held turnpike credit cards, with billings of some commercial accounts running as high as $8,000 a month. Commercial vehicles accounted for about 30 percent of total toll revenue, with a considerable portion of that still coming in the form of cash, Russell said, especially from contract haulers and carriers who were only occasional or one-time users of the turnpike.
  • A program begun this semester at St. John’s School was enlisting the help of older Lawrence residents to work as teacher aides a few hours each week. The program, initiated by math teacher Janet Luch, allowed more one-on-one time for individual children or small groups.
