Four KU students nominated as Truman scholars

Four Kansas University students have been nominated for the national Harry S. Truman Scholarships.

Established by the federal government in 1975, the scholarships provide $30,000 for graduate school to college juniors planning to one day work in public service.

Seventeen KU students have been chosen as Truman scholars since 1981, the university said.

This year’s winners will be announced in April.

KU’s 2014 nominees are:

  • Emma Halling, from Elkhart, Ind., a junior in American studies and women, gender and sexuality studies
  • Virginia Helgeson, from Olathe, a junior in social welfare and religious studies
  • Leigh Loving, from McPherson, a junior in genetics
  • Micah Melia, from Prairie Village, a junior in anthropology.
