40 years ago: Smaller Clinton Parkway a possibility

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 17, 1974:

  • Douglas County commissioners were considering a two-lane alternative to the proposed four-lane Clinton Parkway. The reconsideration of the project was due to the possibility of funding failure. Commissioner I. J. Stoneback said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project could tie into a new county road that would link the lake to West 23rd Street. Commission Chair Walter Cragan had said earlier that the county might be forced to build a two-lane road and buy the right-of-way for a four-lane road if attempts at federal funding fell through.
  • The Kansas State High School Activities Association had recently made arrangements with service stations in the areas of regional athletic tournaments to stay open the coming weekend during hours they might ordinarily be closed. The Turnpike service areas at Matfield Green and Towanda had agreed to stay open late on Saturday and Sunday, along with stations on I-70 in the Salina, Topeka, Hays, Hutchinson, and Wichita areas.
