25 years ago: About half of city commission candidates opposed to suburban mall

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 17, 1989:

  • Eight of the 15 candidates for Lawrence City Commission were against rezoning land for construction of a suburban shopping mall. A survey published by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce revealed that Jeff Arensberg, John Barbian, Dennis Constance, Ken Dziewulski, George Heckman, Kristi Lewis, Shirley Martin-Smith and Bob Walters were all opposed to the rezoning.
  • “Rain Man,” a movie about a car salesman learning to love his brother with autism, received eight Oscar nominations this week, including one for best picture. Other nominations included “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Mississippi Burning,” which each earned seven nods, and “The Accidental Tourist” and “”Working Girl,” both of which were nominated for Best Picture. Sigourney Weaver received a rare double nomination, one for Best Actress for “Gorillas in the Mist” and one for Best Supporting Actress for “Working Girl.”
