Buchanan leads KU track at ISU

February 16, 2014

— Kansas University junior Reid Buchanan was runner-up with a career-best time in the 3,000 meters on Saturday at the ISU Classic, site of the upcoming Big 12 track and field championships.

Buchanan, who finished in 8:14.50, beat his previous best by more than 10 seconds.

KU senior Brendan Soucie earned a personal-best of his own, finishing the 800 in 1:15.31. Soucie’s mark, the fastest indoor 800 by a Jayhawk in nearly seven years, was good for 16th place overall and ranks third in the Big 12 this season.

Sophomore Kelli McKenna was runner-up in the women’s 1,000 meters with 2:52.97. Sophomore Daniel Koech placed fifth in the men’s 1K with 2:30.82.

The Kansas track and field squads will reunite at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, Feb. 28 through March 1, at ISU’s Lied Recreation Center. The KU women’s team will defend its conference title, while Lindsay Vollmer (pentathlon) and Diamond Dixon (400) will try to repeat as individual champions.
