Fashion Column Twins: A peek ahead to spring styling

Incorporate winter fabrics with spring styles to tide you over as the weather warms up.

Fashion always moves faster than Mother Nature. So as the stores roll out their spring styles, we are hesitant to shop for warm-weather pieces thanks to the inevitable 20-degree highs this time of year.

I don’t know about you, but cold winter temperatures don’t exactly prompt me to go shopping for a new spring dress. Each transitional period, I look into my closet and see how I can incorporate spring into my wardrobe with the help of my winter staples and last year’s spring styles.

I love mixing different fabrics together to easily create depth in a look. Elizabeth and I took a chunky knit Gap turtleneck sweater that we would normally wear with jeans and boots throughout winter, and layered it over one of our spring dresses.

Most likely you will have a dress or two that you kept from spring and summer last year, so layer your favorite cable-knit sweater over that, and you have the perfect transitional look. Flats or even ankle boots would be stylish complements to this look. And depending on the weather, you could throw on a pair of tights as well.

If you don’t have a dress, but you have a skirt to pair with your sweater, that’s even better! Don’t be afraid to use your printed spring dresses or skirts. I just like to make sure one is a solid neutral piece to keep the look balanced.

If you’re unsure about mixing your spring dresses or skirts with your current winter sweaters, try the style out with neutral pieces first, then you can work toward incorporating prints. Layering sweaters over dresses in a transitional period is right on trend so you can’t go wrong.
