No changes in description of shooting death investigation; update could come by weekend

An update on the investigation into the shooting death of a 23-year-old Lawrence man could come by week’s end, but on Wednesday Lawrence police reported no change in how they were categorizing the circumstances of the man’s death.

Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman, echoed comments made a day before that police had yet to publicly label the investigation into the early Sunday morning death of Franklin J. Spottedtail, who was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound at a unit of the Northwinds Apartments in the 1100 block of George Court.

McKinley said investigators anticipated being able to more clearly answer by the end of the week questions of whether Spottedtail’s death can be ruled a homicide, whether police are seeking anyone suspected of causing his death or whether charges are expected to be pursued against anyone.
