40 years ago: Jayhawker Towers garage showing structural damage

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 11, 1974:

  • A front-page photograph today showed an area of the elevated parking area at Jayhawker Towers Apartments, 1603 W. 15th, with a sign reading STRUCTURE UNSAFE — DO NOT ENTER — DANGER. A portion of the parking area had broken away from the rest of the structure and had moved several inches away from the hillside. All parking on and under the affected portion had been banned for safety reasons.
  • A frequently-violent national truckers’ strike appeared to be at an end this week, and major Lawrence firms that had been affected were beginning to return to normal. Stokely-Van Camp Inc., which had closed the previous week because the strike had been holding up materials, reopened today and was in “full swing,” according to plant superintendent Gerald Minor. Packer Plastics had also resumed normal operations, and drivers for All Star Transportation Co. were back on the road today as well.
  • A masked armed robber had taken about $175 cash overnight from an attendant at the E-Z Shoop No. 7 at 19th and Haskell. Police said the weapon involved was a .22-caliber rifle with the stock sawed off.
