Lawrence Public Library is kicking off a series of events discussing this year’s Read Across Lawrence selection, “Housekeeping” by Marilynne Robinson, that end March 6 with a lecture and book signing with the Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

Shane J. Lopez, author of “Making Hope Happen” and leading researcher on hope, will give a talk at the Lawrence Arts Center to kick off the community read of “Housekeeping” at 4 p.m. Sunday. Lopez collaborates with scholars around the world to research the links between hope, strengths development, academic success, and overall well-being. Copies of the book will be distributed, and then given away at the library information desk. The library will also have copies of the books available for checkout.

“Housekeeping” is about loss, hope, love and family ties as it follows the narrative of two sisters raised in isolated Fingerbone, Idaho, where they lost both their mother and grandfather in tragic deaths. The sisters have had a haphazard upbringing, first under the care of their competent grandmother, then their comical aunts and finally their eccentric, remote Aunt Sylvie. This is the story of their struggle toward adulthood granted the lessons of loss and survival they have been forced to learn throughout an unconventional lifestyle.

Check out other book discussion events scheduled throughout February and the beginning of March on the library’s website.
