From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 5, 1989:

• Freezing pipes and non-starting cars continued to plague shivering Lawrence residents this week as cold temperatures continued to break records. The Kansas University weather observer reported a trace of snow had fallen on the city overnight. Predictions for the week included highs only in the single digits, with additional snowfall to be ushered into town with winds of 10 to 20 mph. Two local teens had been treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for frostbitten ears, and at least two minor accidents could be attributed to the weather. In one case, a car had slid on the ice through a traffic stop and into another car; in the other, a driver, unable to see through his frosty windshield, had driven into another car in a parking lot. Many local businesses were reporting noticeable decreases in customers, with the exception of video rental stores. A manager at Video Biz, 832 Iowa, said it had been “a mob scene” and was still going strong. Jeff Morris, manager of Pizza Shuttle, said calls for pizza deliveries had been plentiful.
• The Lawrence Board of Zoning Appeals this week decided to allow renovation of an East Lawrence triplex to proceed. The BZA, by a 4-0-1 vote, agreed with the owners of the property at 1101 Pennsylvania that a building permit had been properly issued for the renovation of the triplex, which was located on property zoned for single-family use.
