Single car accident hospitalizes two in Douglas County

A single-vehicle accident in western Douglas County hospitalized two people with serious injuries Monday, according to Lyle Schwartz, division chief of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical.

Ena Yazzie, 40, and Ella Yazzie, 69, both of Topeka, were taken to Stormont-Vail HealthCare, according a crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol. The hospital could not provide an update on their conditions Monday night. They were the vehicle’s only occupants.

One was airlifted from the scene and the other taken by ground, according to Schwartz. He could not say if their injuries were life-threatening.

According to the report, the accident occurred at about 4:20 p.m. on the 1600 block of E. 50 Rd in western Douglas County. The vehicle, a 1999 Chevy Blazer, left the roadway twice and rolled over several times, coming to rest in a ditch.

Schwartz described the accident as the car going into a “fairly large ravine.”
