LHS girls fifth at Emporia

? Jolona Shield scored 17 points to lead three Lawrence High players in double figures, and the LHS girls basketball team defeated Wichita Heights, 64-58, on Saturday for fifth place in the Emporia Glacier’s Edge Tournament.

The Lions’ Makayla Bell scored 16 points, Kionna Coleman added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Marissa Pope had 10 assists. Shield hit four three-pointers.

“I’m extremely proud of the girls. This was a great win for us,” LHS coach Nick Wood said. “Hopefully it will show our girls we can be competitive with some of the best teams in the state.”

The Lions built a 19-9 lead after one quarter.

“It was our third day in a row traveling to Emporia, and you never know what kind of energy is going to get off that bus,” Wood said. “But they set a really good tone.”

The Lions (4-9) will play Friday at home against Shawnee Mission South.
