From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 2, 1974:

• A letter to the editor today from a Lawrence resident praised the large turnout of young people at the South Park Recreation Center during a recent blood drive. “All had long hair and scattered among them were all degrees of hirsute achievements in mustaches, goatees, sideburns and beards in all possible combinations,” said the letter-writer. “The dress was casual but not sloppy. They were neat and relaxed in their own states of individual expression. The point of all this is to bring into focus the folly and stupidity of those among us who never have a good or understanding word or kind thought for this segment of our population. Strange, indeed, is the way some people equate appearance preferences with evil, worthlessness, degradation and failure.”
• In his State of the Union address this week, President Nixon gave a qualified pledge to cooperate with House impeachment investigators but said his cooperation would be tempered by his presidential responsibilities. “One year of Watergate is enough,” Nixon said as he called on Congress to help him complete a 10-point national agenda in 1974, including action to “break the back of the energy crisis” and major proposals in the fields of health insurance and welfare reform. The president ended by stating that he had “no intention whatever of ever walking away from the job that the people elected me to do for the people of the United States.”
