Lawrence police say no probable cause to jail man detained after three-hour police standoff
After entering an apartment in the 1500 block of West Eighth Terrace Monday following a three-hour armed standoff, officers who took a man into custody for the incident decided no probable cause existed to jail him, Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said Tuesday.
The man was taken into custody Monday at Village Square Apartments after police obtained a search warrant to enter the residence, McKinley said. Officers believed the man had been connected to an alleged aggravated assault in which a person’s car had been taken and a man threatened the alleged victim with a handgun.
Police did not book the man after further investigation following his departure from the apartment, McKinley said. Because of the ongoing investigation, McKinley declined to provide further details.
“As the investigation progressed, officers determined insufficient probable cause existed to book the suspect into jail; therefore, he was released,” McKinley said.
McKinley said that when the investigation is finished, the Lawrence Police Department will forward its findings to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide if charges are warranted.
