100 years ago: County to repair popular Lawrence-Eudora road

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 21, 1914:

  • “Tired of spending money for straw to mend, temporarily, the bad places in the road between Lawrence and Eudora, the county commissioners decided to convert this sandy river route into an up-to-date, hard, smooth thoroughfare. They propose to make this change by placing six inches of gumbo and clay on the road and mixing it with the sand. Through natural causes it is said that it will become nearly as hard as pavement…. The entire route is covered with sharp sand, the result of the 1903 flood, that in the dry weather is three feet deep, making any kind of travel extremely difficult. This is especially bad for automobile tourists. This road lies on the Red Line, the Golden Belt, the Midland Trail, and the White Way. Indications are that the greatest number of tourists that have ever made the transcontinental trip will pass over this road next summer on their way to the Panama Exposition…. The committee investigating the needs of this road found that on an ordinary Sunday when this road was in good condition 105 cars were on the route between Lawrence and Eudora at once, showing the use this thoroughfare receives.”
  • “An offer of a football game with a member of the ‘Big Nine’ is the latest tribute of the prowess and good standing of the Haskell Indians in the athletic world. Manager C. C. Childs of the University of Indiana recently telegraphed Manager Venne an offer for a game to be played at Indianapolis, Indiana, on October 30. The invitation from the Indiana team is a compliment worth receiving and it is with much regret that Haskell is forced to decline this offer as the annual game of the Hoosiers in their capital city is a money maker and aside from this the Indians are always willing to try the mettle of the best of the college world. October 30, however, is the date of the Haskell-Texas A. and M. contest which has grown to be one of the most important of the Indian schedule. This game is played at Dallas on ‘College Day’ of the State Fair, and is one of the championship games of the South where the Indians are a great favorite. Manager Venne telegraphed back to Manager Childs offering to come on the following Saturday, but as this is the date of the Indiana-Illinois game, of course, it was out of the question. Haskell’s showing for the past few years and the plucky game they placed against Notre Dame was probably responsible for the invitation and it was much regretted at Haskell that the contract could not be made. While Haskell has in the past played Chicago, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, and Nebraska, the Indians have never played the University of Indiana.”
  • “The Baptist church held their Christmas program last night at the church and they will not have any Christmas services during the next week. The money that is generally spent for a Christmas treat for the children was spent for flour to feed the starving Belgians.”
  • “With another rise in temperature the snow began to fall early yesterday and continued until late in the afternoon. The weatherman says there was 3.9 inches of snow fell yesterday. This makes the snow about seven inches deep and it is evenly spread over the ground. There has been very little wind with the snow that has fallen and the sleighing has been good for several days…. This now is the best thing that could have come for the wheat and the other winter crops, for the weather has been very dry during the fall and early winter and the snow is a protection from the cold weather as well as making moisture.”
  • “The High School football sweaters were received today by Johnson and Carl. These sweaters are to be presented to the football players by the High School Athletic Association. They are a distinctive shade of gray with crimson ‘Ls.'”
