Woman charged after near accident, cellphone theft

A woman arrested Wednesday after allegedly stealing a man’s cellphone following a near car accident was charged Thursday with one count of battery and theft.

Sgt. Amy Rhoads of the Lawrence Police Department said a 31-year-old Lawrence man was riding a bicycle near 11th and New Jersey streets Wednesday afternoon when Kylene Nicole Dickerson nearly struck the man with her vehicle.

The victim then used his phone to photograph the vehicle before a confrontation ensued with the driver. Rhoads said the suspect grabbed the phone and drove away.

Douglas County Judge Pro Tem James George set Dickerson’s bond at $1,000. She has been in the Douglas County Jail since her arrest. Dickerson is scheduled to make her next court appearance Dec. 30.
