Lawrence area receives up to 2 inches of snow overnight

Snow tops the branches of trees as early morning commuters pass by the Douglas County courthouse in downtown Lawrence, Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014.

The National Weather Service in Topeka reported 0.6 inches of snow fell on Lawrence overnight Thursday.

Higher amounts, in the 1 to 2 inch range, were reported throughout the city by residents. Road crews estimated Lawrence received 2 to 3 inches of snow, according to City Hall.

A Winter Weather Advisory was allowed to expire at 9 a.m. Thursday. Local law enforcement did not report any major traffic accidents as a result of the snowfall.

Lt. Steve Lewis of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said agencies across the county were busy with vehicles sliding off roadways, particularly along Kansas Highway 10 and U.S. Highway 59.

“It was pretty much the usual first-snow-of-the-season type of driving day,” Lewis said. “I guess that it takes a couple of snowy travel days for drivers to remember to slow down, maintain greater distance to other vehicles and allow more time to safely travel their usual routes.”

Sgt. Trent McKinley of the Lawrence Police Department said no injuries came from “some minor collisions.”

Areas surrounding Topeka and Kansas City reported 3 to 4 inches of snow. For updated totals from northeast Kansas, visit the National Weather Service’s website.

The NWS forecasts a Thursday afternoon high of 34 degrees, with an evening low of 27. There is a slight chance of freezing drizzle after midnight.

No more snow is expected to arrive in the near future. Friday will see a high of 36 degrees, and Saturday, Sunday and Monday are forecasted to see highs in the 40s. There is a slight chance of rain Sunday night into Monday.

City crews began treating Lawrence roads at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and continued to work through the morning Thursday. For more info, visit www.lawrenceks.org/snow.
